Charli D’Amelio Speaks Out About Her Struggle with Eating Disorder
In September 2020, Charli D’Amelio talked about her eating disorder for the first time in an Instagram story. She shared this after some people criticised her for lip-syncing to the song “Prom Queen” by Beach Bunny on TikTok, which has the lyrics “count your calories.”
She said she’s been scared to talk about it, even with close friends and family, but felt it was important to share in hopes of helping others who struggle with body image.
She explained that while she’s always tried to speak out on body image issues, this was the first time she talked about her struggle. “It’s so uncomfortable to admit to even your closest friend and family, let alone the world,” she said. “I’ve been afraid to share that I have an eating disorder, but, ultimately, I hope that by sharing this, I can help someone else.”
“I know disorders are something that so many other people are also battling behind closed doors,” Charli continued.
She also apologised to her followers, saying, “If I have ever played a song and not realised that those lyrics could have triggered you, I’m really sorry,” and added that she “never intended to cause you harm.”

Charli D’Amelio shared a message of support for anyone going through similar struggles. She said, “For anyone that is struggling with this, I know some days can be worse than others,” and included a link to the National Eating Disorders Association’s website.
She added, “I need you to know you are not alone. Remember it’s OK to reach out and get help,” and “We all need help sometimes. I love you all, and please stay strong.”
Earlier this year, Charli also spoke about dealing with body dysmorphia and “bad eating habits” while talking about the impact of online bullying.
In a February video for Safer Internet Day, she shared, “Some of the most hurtful comments I read about myself online are, ‘She’s fatter than when we got her famous,’ or ‘She’s ugly.’ They don’t like the way my face looks for some reason.”
TikTok star Addison Rae also responded to hurtful body-shaming comments in April and shared a positive message for fans who might be dealing with similar experiences.
She said that seeing people call her “fat” and “a whale” made her feel bad about herself. But instead of letting it bring her down, she chose to turn those comments into motivation.
“I’ve been very motivated to start eating better and working out every day to become the healthiest version of myself,” she said, and encouraged her fans to do the same.
